Marauders Fall to Rams in Three Sets

Millersville, Pa - After sweeping Cheney Friday night, Millersville found itself in the opposite position against West Chester Saturday, falling in three straight sets (25-17, 25-13, 26-24).

Erin Harman led Millersville with eight kills while Katie Witwer and Kelsi Ceriana each totaled six. Brooklyn Smith recorded a team-high 14 digs in the effort, and Grace Dawson matched her effort against Cheyney, totaling 26 assists. The Marauders failed to tally one total block in the match for the first time this season and struggled equally at the net hitting for an attack percentage of just .120.

In the first set, Millersville battled to keep it close early, trading kills with West Chester. Millersville looked to take the momentum, recording three straight points to make the score 15-13 in favor of the Golden Rams. That momentum was halted just as quickly as it started when the Marauders committed an error and West Chester scored three consecutive points of their own. Trailing 21-16, Millersville took a timeout and came out swinging as Ceriana sent home a kill. The Marauders got in their own way again, however, committing an error and giving West Chester the serve with the chance to take game one, which it did as Karleigh Lutz recorded back-to-back kills. Harman and Ceriana each had three kills in a set that featured 28 of the 42 total points decided via the kill.

The second set was one-sided as West Chester built a lead early off the serves of Allie Duffy and Jillian Grammer (7-2). Millersville battled back to within two points when Rhianna Kalescky, Harman, and Dawson recorded consecutive kills to make the score 6-8. Once again, Lutz stopped the Marauders momentum with a kill and the Golden Rams never looked back scoring five of the next seven points. Despite Millersville's best efforts to keep the game close, West Chester steadily added to their lead before finishing the set on a Victoria Cruciani Kill (25-13).

The third set was extremely competitive as the Marauders fought all the way to the end. Millersville led by the score of 12-7 when they committed a service error, and the Golden Rams proceeded to take the next three points via the kill. Looking to regroup, Millersville took a timeout but West Chester came out swinging taking four of the next five points. The Marauders would battle back when Kalescky and Dawson sent home consecutive kills, knotting the game at 20 before regaining the lead at 22-20. With the score 24-23 in favor of Millersville, the Marauders faltered, committing two errors in the last three points giving the Golden Rams the set and match victory.

Millersville looks to rebound as they travel to Johnstown for a PSAC Crossover next weekend. The Marauders (10-8, 2-7), face Clarion (2 p.m.) and Indiana (5 p.m.) Friday before taking on California PA (12:30 p.m.) and Seton Hill (3:30 p.m.) Saturday.
