Johnstown, Pa. -Â The score was tied at 72-72 with 22 seconds to play but Pitt-Johnstown made a pair of free throws late to outlast the MIllersville women's basketball team 74-72 on Wednesday night inside the Mountain Cats' Sports Center.
The Marauders' (10-5, 7-3 PSAC) four-game win streak was snapped and they fell to 3-5 on the road this season. Pitt-Johnstown (9-5, 6-4 PSAC) outscored Millersville 40-28 in the second half, has now won two straight and is 4-1 at home in 2014-15. UPJ leads the all-time series 15-7 and has taken six straight meetings between the two teams.Â
The Marauders led by 10, 44-34, at the half but the home team opened the second stanza on a 9-3 run to pull within four, 47-43. The visitors weathered the storm for the time being and pushed the lead back to five, 51-46, with 15:38 to go in the game. However, the Mountain Cats were just getting started and they used a 20-4 fury over the next 7:37 and were looking at their biggest lead of the game, which was 11, 66-55.
Despite that run, Millersville got up off the mat and scored 17 of the next 23 points in a span of seven minutes and 39 seconds.
Shelby Reimer fueled the fire with seven points and the run was capped by a
Courtney Hinnant layup at the 22-second mark that tied the game back up at 72-72. That was the first tie since 52-52 at the 11:48 mark of the second half.
After Pitt-Johnstown called a timeout and brought the ball up, the PSAC's second-leading scorer in Jasmine Harper was fouled underneath by
Yasmin Cooper and made her first free throw attempt. Head coach
Mary Fleig called a timeout to set up her last second offense before Harper missed the second free throw, but the Mountain Cats were able to secure the offensive rebound before being fouled once again with just one second on the clock. Olivia McCabe made the first, missed the second and
Tyisha White got the rebound but didn't have enough time to get the last-second heave off.
In the first 10 minutes and nine seconds of the game, the contest saw five lead changes and four ties with the final coming at 17-17 and the 9:51 mark. The away team then went on a 19-5 run and had its biggest advantage of the game at 14, 36-22, with 3:42 to go in the first half. From that point until intermission, the home team was never closer than six and the two squads headed into the locker room with the Marauders up 10.
Reimer tallied a team-high 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half, as she was 7-of-16 from the floor including 5-for-10 from behind the arc. She also earned two rebounds to go with a game-high five assists. The other two scorers in double figures were
Carly Gallagher with 13 and
Courtney Hinnant with 10.
Yasmin Cooper brought down a game-high 10 rebounds to go with her five points.
Alex Stam made her eighth consecutive start and had six points on two 3-pointers along with a game-high four steals. Stam has made at least two triples in five straight contests and six of the last seven.
Team-wise, the Black and Gold were outrebounded 44-36 including 30-22 on the defensive glass. They were outscored 38-25 in bench scoring but had the advantage in points in the paint, 34-28. For just the third time all season, Millersville was beaten when outscoring its opponent in the paint (9-3).Â
The Marauders now come home for two, the first of which will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Cheyney.
