Moe Powers Marauders Past East Stroudsburg

Millersville, Pa. - Anthony Moe's 22 points and 18 rebounds and a stingy defensive effort led Millersville to a 61-58 victory over PSAC East-leading East Stroudsburg Saturday at Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders' snapped East Stroudsburg's six-game winning streak and held it to its fewest points in more than two seasons.

East Stroudsburg's high-flying offense had produced at least 98 points in four of the last six games, topping the 100-point mark three times. But Millersville held the Warriors to a season-low 35.2 percent shooting. A key was the defense played on All-American Whis Grant, who shot 3-for-11 from the field. Rasheed Moore, who had scored 20-plus points in each of his last two games and won the PSAC East Player of the Week Award last week, was held completely in check by the 6-10 Moe. Moore managed just two points and two rebounds.

The Marauders weathered an ESU storm at the end of the first period, keeping the Warriors within range while trailing, 30-23.The Marauders started the second half on a 13-1 run fueled by seven points from Eddie Callender, including a 3-pointer that put his team in front by five. East Stroudsburg battled back and retied the game three more times, but Millersville never relinquished its lead.

With 2:27 to play, Whis Grant knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 57-57. Both teams forced stops on two consecutive possession, and with 46 seconds left, after a runner from Tavon Parker missed on the backside, Moe ripped down the rebound and scored on a putback to give Millersville a two-point lead, 59-57. At the other end, Grant was fouled near midcourt, but after making the first he missed the game-tying foul shot, keeping Millersville ahead by one.

East Stroudsburg entered the game tops in the PSAC in turnovers created, and it did its job as Millersville tried to salt away the clock. Rasheed Moore intercepted a pass with 15 seconds left, giving ESU a chance for the final shot and the win. The ball found its way to Grant, who drove hard to the right side. But the Marauder defenders collapsed on Grant, leaving only a cross-court pass as an option. Shawn Williams deflected the pass, chased down the ball and half court and raced in for an uncontested layup as time expired.

Moe's 18 boards were the most by a Marauder since Elijah Obade's 18 in December of 2012. He also swatted two shots. Eight of his boards came on the offensive glass, which helped Millersville total 16 second chance points. Callender also recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds and added four steals. Millersville snapped a string of four consecutive wins in the series for East Stroudsburg.

Millersville heads to Mansfield on Wednesday for a PSAC East match-up starting at 5:30 p.m.
