Parker's Key Plays Help Marauders Survive Cheyney

Millersville, Pa. - With Saturday's game with Cheyney hanging in the balance, Millersville senior Kelvin Parker made the difference. Parker sent the game into overtime with a driving hoop and then gave the Marauders the lead for good with a dunk and assist to Sam Light on back-to-back plays. Millersville denied Cheyney on its final offensive possession for a 70-68 win.

Parker recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, grabbing six on the offensive glass. He also dished out five assists. Millersville (7-9, 4-7 PSAC) improved to 6-2 at home and 4-0 in overtime with the win. The win looked well in hand with just under minutes to play in regulation as the Marauders led by 11. Cheyney's full court pressure pestered the Marauders in five turnovers in the next three-plus minutes and the Wolves drew within 55-53.

With 51 seconds to play, Kevin Larkin, Cheyney's leading scorer, drilled a 3-pointer that put his team ahead 61-60 and extended a 20-7 run. With a chance to take the lead, Light missed a shot in traffic, and then after stealing a pass at half court, Parker led Shawn Williams too far on an outlet pass, leading to a turnover. Cheyney's Charles Ayetigbo hit his first free throw to extend the lead to two, but missing the second proved costly. Parker took the ball from the right wing and drove hard into a trio of Wolves. His shot banked home, giving Millersville a second chance at victory.

Millersville trailed 66-65 at the two-minute mark. Light tracked down a long rebound off a Larkin missed 3-pointer and pushed the ball ahead to Parker, who emphatically gave Millersville a one-point lead with a two-handed slam. Cheyney's Jerrod Johnson missed a shot at the other end. Parker battled for the rebound and a pass to Light led to a three-point play and a 70-66 Millersville advantage. Jerrod Johnson hit two foul shots with 1:01 to play, and Millersville survived a pair shots from Mike Drinks and Juwan Mullen as time ticked away.

Saturday's game epitomized the rivalry of late as eight of the last 11 games have been decided by single digits, including the last four, decided by a total of 13 points. It was Millersville's fourth consecutive win over the Wolves.

Eddie Callender registered a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Light scored a career-high 20 points, hitting all five of his free throws. Tavon Parker added 10 points and nine rebounds. Millersville's 61 rebounds were a season high.

Millersville hosts Lock Haven on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
