Millersville, Pa. - Coach
Fred Thompson went to his bench early to shake up a slow-starting Millersville club. That move worked to perfection. The re-energized Marauders roared past Lock Haven and then coasted down the stretch for a convincing 74-53 win behind 22 points from
Kelvin Parker.
Millersville (8-9, 5-7 PSAC) has now won four of its last six. Parker, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, made an early statement for another weekly award with his performance Wednesday night. He hit 5-of-10 shots from the field and all 10 free throws, and was a disrupter on the defensive end, blocking two shots and recording four steals. He was instrumental in holding the PSAC's leading scorer Wali Hepburn to 5-of-18 shooting from the field. The Marauders pestered Lock Haven into 26.5 percent shooting in the first half and 32.3 percent shooting for the game. The 21-point win marked the Marauders largest margin of victory of the season.
Millersville's starting lineup, Parker included, started the game 1-for-4 with three turnovers and went scoreless for the first five minutes. Thompson called for a full lineup change, and freshman
Sam Light, who finished with 15 points, ignited the sluggish group with a pair of triples. Millersville doubled-up Lock Haven by a 32-16 margin the rest of the half. The Marauders led by eight with just over nine minutes to play, but that's when the game became Parker's. He scored nine straight Millersville points in a 9-2 run, which included a three and a pair of fastbreak buckets off of a steal and blocked shot. That put Millersville's lead at 17 and it only grew over the final seven minutes.
Parker has scored 22-plus points in three of his last four games and has now scored double figures in 27 consecutive dating back to last season. He has also recorded 16 steals in his last four games.
Light provided efficient offense, hitting 3-of-5 shots from the field, both 3-point attempts and all seven free throws in 18 minutes.
Tommy Patterson turned in a career performance with highs in points (10) and rebounds (7). He also swatted two shots.
Eddie Callender chipped in 11 points and nine boards.
The hit the road on Saturday with a trip to Shippensburg. Game time is 3 p.m. Fans can listen live on
