California Pa. - Behind two unanswered second-half goals, the California University men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory over the Millersville Marauders. With the loss on Saturday afternoon, the Marauders dropped to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action. The win marked the first time since the 2008 that the Vulcans defeated Millersville, and they improved to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the PSAC.
Millersville was able to strike first 26 minutes into the first half when a Vulcan defender fouled
Christopher Sosa just outside the penalty box and the Marauders were rewarded a free kick. Sosa converted on the free kick from 25-yards out for his first goal of 2014. However, the Vulcans were able to answer at the 67:18 mark with a penalty kick goal by Jeffery Kyei.Â
The Vulcans broke the tie in the 82nd minute when freshman Nathan Delgado scored his first colligate goal. Delgado was on the receiving end of a brilliant pass by Djorjde Babic, who left the ball where Delgado had a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper
David Brubaker. Brubaker was unable to make the save as the ball trickled past him into the back of the net giving the Vulcans the 2-1 victory.
CalU finished the match with a 13-10 advantage in shots as both teams combined for 18 in the second half. The Vulcans also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Millersville returns to action Monday, Sept. 27 when it travels to Philadelphia to battle Holy Family. The game is the final non-conference matchup for the Marauders, who will embark into the heart of conference play beginning Oct. 3 when they face Gannon at Pucillo Field.
