Cheyney, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team needed only three sets to cruise past Cheyney on Saturday afternoon inside Cope Hall. The Marauders did so with a season-high hitting percentage of .393 while all 16 members of the team saw action. The Wolves answered with just a .090 hitting percentage of their own with 18 kills and 11 errors on 78 total attacks.
Millersville (8-6, 2-4 PSAC) swept Cheyney (1-11, 0-6 PSAC) with set scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-13 to improve to 39-0 all-time against the Wolves. The Marauders were led by redshirt senior
Mary Paul and after matches like this, it's no wonder as to why the Philadelphia, Pa. native entered 2014 sixth on the program's career hitting percentage chart (.207). Saturday, she sent home 11 kills to just one error on 17 swings for a blistering hitting percentage of .588.
The visitors opened the first set on a 6-1 run that was fueled by a pair of kills from freshman
Erin Harman. The closest their hosts could get was three points, 6-3, but Millersville didn't look back. The Marauders led by as many as 12, 21-9 and ended up taking the set by 11 points. The away team hit .258 in that set but it was just getting started.
Millersville began the second set on a 13-5 run and just continued to keep the pressure on its counterpart. The fury to open the set was supported by two kills each from Paul,
Rhianna Kalescky and
Taylor Smith. The Marauders went on to lead the set by as many as 14 as it was in the final score and hit a red-hot .448 in the second stanza.
The two teams tied five times in the first 16 points of the third set but wouldn't again after the score was 8-8. Millersville scored 17 of the final 22 points to take the set by a 12-point margin. The Marauders hit at a clip of .483 in that set with 18 kills and four errors on 29 swings.
Lesinski was behind Paul in kills with nine while
Victoria Biggins was responsible for 18 assists. Defensively, both Biggins and
Brooklyn Smith had nine digs apiece and Harman registered a solo block.
Millersville will travel to Shippensburg on Tuesday and that match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
