Millersville, Pa. -Â The Millersville volleyball team dropped two matches against PSAC West opponents on day two of its conference crossover. The Marauders took undefeated Seton Hill down to the wire but the Griffins won in five sets before California (Pa.) swept in straight sets for the nightcap.
Seton Hill (12-0, 4-0 PSAC) hit a red-hot .311 to take down Millersville (6-6, 0-4 PSAC) with set scores of 17-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-18, and 8-15. Then, the Vulcans (8-5, 2-2 PSAC) needed just three sets to get a victory over the Marauders and did so with scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-18.Â
The Griffins opened the first set on a 10-4 run and forced a timeout by Millersville head coach
Brian Smith. After the breather, the momentum continued for Seton Hill as it pushed its lead to 10, 22-12 and the Marauders used another timeout.The home team scored five of the final eight points but it wasn't enough as the visitors won the first set.Â
The Griffins opened the second set with a 6-1 run and held the advantage throughout. Seton Hill led by as many as 10. After hitting .391 in the first stanza, the Griffins stayed hot with a .333 clip in the second set.
Millersville came to life in the third set and opened the frame with a 9-3 run that was fueled by three service aces from freshman
Victoria Biggins.The Marauders held their lead until the away team was able to battle back and knot the score up at 21-21. Both teams split the last six points but Millersville scored the final two to take the third set.
Seton Hill opened the fourth set with the lead and held it all the way until the score was tied, 10-10. The Griffins then called a timeout that came in the midst of a 8-1 run for the Marauders who were up 15-11. After four straight by Seton Hill, the score was tied again, 15-15. Millersville closed the set on a 10-3 run to take the set and tie the match up at two sets apiece.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Marauders were up 3-0 to start until the Griffins embarked on a 9-3 fury and were leading 9-5. Millersville was never able to regain the lead though and dropped the fifth set and the match.
Erin Harman led the Marauder attack with 14 kills and Biggins tallied a career-high 52 assists. Defensively,
Brooklyn Smith dug out 23 balls, Harman added 15 digs and
Katie Lesinski assisted on four blocks.
Millersville led 10-5 to begin the first set against CalU before the visitors used a 12-1 run to take a 17-11 lead. From that point on, the closest the Marauders could get was four points but the Vulcans took the first set.
Millersville opened the second set with another lead and this time it was 3-0. After an 8-1 run by CalU, the Vulcans took an 8-4 advantage. They then continued that momentum and closed the stanza on an 17-5 run to take the set and a two sets to one lead.
The third set was the closest of the match that saw six ties, but no lead changes. The final tie came at 13-13 but CalU was too much to handle as it took the set by seven points and the match in straight sets.Â
Lesinski led the offense with eight kills and Biggins aided the offense with 18 assists. On the other side,
Brooklyn Smith had 15 digs, Harman added 10 and
Kayla Wallace had three block assists.Â
The Marauders now face a three-game roadtrip that begins with West Chester on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
