Millersville Splits on Day Two of Wildcat Regional Invitational

Newark, Del. - The Millersville volleyball team swept Holy Family in straight sets before falling to Merrimack in four sets to round out play in the Wildcat Regional Invitational with a 1-2 mark on the weekend. 

The Marauders (5-2) defeated the Tigers (2-7) with set scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20. Millersville has beaten Holy Family four times in the last two seasons and now leads the all-time series 7-1. In the day's second match, the Marauders and Merrimack (4-2) squared off for the first time ever with the Warriors coming out on top 26-28, 25-10, 25-16, and 25-19. 

In the first set of the day, the Tigers hit .256 to just .171 by Millersville and there were 10 ties with three lead changes throughout. The score was tied at 21 points apiece before the Marauders scored four of the final five points to take a one-set lead. Holy Family opened the second set on a 10-4 run and went up by as many as 10, 20-10. Millersville then reeled off 15 of the next 18 points to take the set thanks in part to four kills from Katie Lesinski, three by Erin Harman, and two each from Kayla Wallace and Stephanie Kovacs

Set three saw the Tigers jump out to a 5-2 advantage. However, the Marauders fought back and Holy Family's final lead of the match came at 9-8. Millersville outscored its opponent 17-11 down the stretch to take the match in straight sets. 

Lesinski was the biggest offensive threat with 11 kills to just two errors on 40 total attacks (.225) while Victoria Biggins delivered 37 assists. Defensively, Brooklyn Smith turned in 25 digs and Harman added 16 while Mary Paul had four block assists.

The first set against Merrimack tallied an astounding 19 ties to go with six lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points but Millersville trailed 26-25 before scoring the final three points to take the first set. The Warriors dominated the second set with a blistering .400 hitting percentage on 14 kills, four errors and 25 attack chances. 

Set three was much of the same as Merrimack hit .355 to only .051 from the Marauders. In the fourth set, the Warriors kept rolling with an attack percentage of .367 to just .059 by Millersville. On the match, Merrimack hit a red-hot .294 and the Marauders answered with a .074 clip of their own. 

Both Mary Paul and Wallace had eight kills, Biggins totaled 34 assists, Brooklyn Smith dug out 10 balls, and Emily Kaledas assisted on five blocks. 

Millersville travels to Philadelphia on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start against the Rams.
