Millersville, Pa. - Senior
Katelyn Zapp scored a career-high four goals as the No. 1-ranked Millersville field hockey team rolled past Kutztown 6-1 Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Millersville (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) opened PSAC play with a convincing victory in which Zapp became the first Marauder to score four goals in a game since Jaclyn Kulesza in 2005. She missed Dena Gockley's (1994) school record by just one. The Marauders scored the first six goals of the game before surrendering a goal to Kutztown's (2-1, 1-0 PSAC) Anna Behm with 3:59 remaining. It was the first goal allowed by Millersville at home since Sept. 27, 2013--a streak of 604 minutes.
The Marauders totaled 10 shots in each half to hold a 20-8 advantage. They got on the board 9:43 into the contest when
Champayne Hess found Zapp for the game's first goal. Less than five minutes later, sophomore
Arianna Grays went one-on-one with goalkeeper Chardonnay Hope and scored her first goal of the season. Freshmen teammates
Kathleen Bishop and
Margaret Maclean teamed the first points of their careers and the third goal of the half.
The second half belonged to Zapp. The 3-0 lead grew quickly when Zapp scored back-to-back goals in just 1:35. She added another at the 60:59 mark, putting a cap on a career day.
Taylor Parker registered her first career assist on the second of Zapp's three second half goals. Zapp now has six goals on the season and at least one in each game.
Millersville has outscored its opponents a convincing 13-1 through three games. The Marauders host non-conference foe Newberry on Sunday at 1 p.m. Following the game, Olympians Katie O'Donnell and
Marvin Bam and USA National Team goalkeeper Alesha Widdall will host a K16 clinic for youth players. For more information, click
