Vogel Vaults Marauders Over Shepherd

Box Score Shepherdstown, W.V. - Junior Hannah Vogel's last second goal lifted the Millersville women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 win over non-conference opponent Shepherd University on Saturday afternoon.

Millersville (5-5) led for the majority of the game and was up by four goals (14-10) with only 13 minutes remaining. Shepherd (7-4) stormed back and tied the game at 14 goals apiece with Georgia Karr's unassisted score. Neither team was able to generate offense as the scoreboard time wound down and it appeared as if the match was headed to overtime.

Enter Hannah Vogel.

Vogel, who had already scored four goals in the game, avenged a turnover just minutes prior by sprinting past her defender on the right wing and flicking in the game-winning goal with 22 seconds left on the clock. Her shot was setup by a save from keeper Kaitlin Crouthamel and a good clear attempt from the Marauders.

The Rams did win the following draw control, but the Black and Gold defense put the clamps on, did not allow a shot, forced Shepherd into a turnover, and ran out the remaining seconds on the clock.

Millersville was led by Vogel who finished with a season-high six points on five goals and an assist. Brooke Fisher totaled four scores and four draw controls, while first year Marauder Hannah Corcoran had a career day by scoring her first collegiate hat trick. Crouthamel recorded her third highest career save total in the game, stopping 14 of Shepherd's 36 shots.

Corcoran got the Black and Gold on the board first, tallying her first score of the day just 21 seconds into play. Vogel, Fisher, and Renee Landis each netted a pair of scores before the half and gave the visitors a 7-5 lead at halftime intermission.

Shepherd changed its game plan at the break and the strategy worked. The Rams outscored Millersville 5-2 to start the second period and took their first lead of the contest, 10-9. The Marauders answered right back by netting five unanswered scores and seem to have the game in hand wiht the 14-10 lead, before Shepherd came back to tie, and Vogel's late game heroics.

The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Black and Gold.

Millersville returns home to host Kutztown University this Wednesday, April 9, at 4 p.m. Last season, the Marauders defeated the Golden Bears 15-11 on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
