Box Score Millersville, Pa. - In a back-and-forth game on a frigid and snowy afternoon, it was the Millersville women's lacrosse team that came out on top over East Stroudsburg. The Marauders scored with nine seconds left in regulation to force Tuesday's game into overtime. Millersville outscored the Warriors 3-1 in the extra time to pull out the narrow 16-14 win.
Senior
Brooke Fisher led Millersville (4-2, 1-1 PSAC) with six goals and scored both the game-tying goal in regulation and the game-winning goal in overtime to vault the home-standing Marauders to victory.
During steady snow, neither team was able to heat up and build momentum throughout the match. During regulation, neither team scored more than two consecutive goals without the other team finding the back of the net. As the teams traded goals back and forth for the final 22 minutes of regulation, East Stroudsburg (6-1, 1-1 PSAC) seemed to have the game in control with possession and a one goal lead.
The Marauders did not quit, though, and forced a turnover and came down the field to try and score the tying goal. Head coach
Mia Hall elected not to call the timeout so that the Warrior defense was unable to get set. After a few quick passes Fisher darted towards the net in an attempt to score. The officials called a foul and the senior was awarded a free position attempt. She calmly took her spot, and fired to the top left corner to tie the game at 13-13 with only nine seconds left on the scoreboard.
East Stroudsburg did not let the momentum shift too far in the Marauders favor and scored the opening goal of the overtime frame. The Millersville defense would stiffen, though, and did not allow another goal the rest of the way.
The Black and Gold controlled the following draw control and freshman
Renee Landis was able to even the game at 14-14 just before the closing seconds of the first portion of overtime.
After the teams switched sides three minutes into the extra period, Millersville again won the draw control and scored the eventual game-winning goal with 2:11 to play off of the stick of Fisher.
Ella Callahan stepped back into the circle knowing that if she gathered the next draw she would position her team to be able to run out the clock and finish with the win. As the whistle blew the sophomore quickly popped the ball in the air and snagged the draw control. Millersville was able to drain the clock in the final minutes and added an insurance goal with only three seconds remaining, to finish with the 16-14 decision.
The Marauders did committ a large amount of fouls near the goal which led to 16 free position opportunites for the Warriors. However, the Black and Gold won many other statistical categories that helped propel them to a win. Millersville doubled ESU's groundball total (28-14) and had two more draw controls than the Warriors in every period to finish with six more than the visitors (20-14).
When it mattered most, Millersville stepped up its game. In the overtime period the Marauders outshot the Warriors 5-1 and had a 4-2 edge in draw controls.
Fisher's six scores ties a season high for the attacker and places her in the team lead with 26 goals this year.
Hannah Vogel led the Black and Gold with three assists and also poured in three scores herself.
Renee Landis and
Caitlin Shannon each tallied two goals and keeper
Kaitlin Crouthamel nearly recorded her second straight double-digit save effort, coming up one shy with nine saves in the match.
The loss for the Warriors is their first this season. Prior to today's game East Stroudsburg was the only team in the conference that had not lost a game. Meanwhile, Millersville picks up its first PSAC victory of the 2014 campaign.
