Box Score Charlotte, N.C. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team lead by one goal with six minutes to go against the No. 11-ranked Queens (N.C) Royals on Tuesday afternoon, but two goals in the final five minutes, including a score with one second to play, dealt Millersville a 11-10 loss, their first defeat of the season.
Millersville (3-1) trailed 4-3 at halftime, but surged out to a 7-5 lead after outscoring the Royals 4-1 to start the second period. Queens (6-3) stormed back and tied the game at eight with just over 10 minutes remaining. Marauder attacker
Brooke Fisher put the visitors back on top when she scored on a pass from freshman
Renee Landis with 9:40 left on the scoreboard. The Royals responded again with a goal, but Landis helped put Millersville in front when she assisted
Hannah Vogel at the 6:09 mark and it seemed that the Black and Gold had the game in control.
Queens was determined not to pick up its fourth loss of the season, though, and pulled off two miraculous goals in the final minutes to capture the win. After a failed clear attempt by the Marauders with 5:34 left to play, the Royals wasted only 21 seconds to turn the turnover into a goal and tie the game at 10-10.
The Black and Gold got the ball back after Fisher controled the draw control. Turnovers by each team kept the ball with the visitors and Fisher's shot in the 28th minute nearly put Millersville in the forefront again, but Royals keeper Danielle Horoschak made the save and paused the scoreboard at 10 goals apiece.
With 23 seconds to play another Marauder failed clear and turnover gave the ball back to Queens with a short amount of time remaining. The Royals used the most of their time and a pass from Maggie Masters found the stick of Brittany Larranaga who buried her shot into the back of the net putting Queens up 11-10 with just one second left in the game.
The one point loss is not unique to Millersville. With Tuesday's narrowest of defeats it marks the fourth straight season in which the Marauders have had at least one game in which they lost by only one goal.
Millersville notched its second highest assist total of the season (7) in the loss, despite scoring eight goals less than its season average. The Marauders were led by Fisher who had five points on four goals and an assist. The senior is now third in the conference with 4.5 goals per game. Freshman
Renee Landis failed to push her hat trick streak to four games, but did record three helpers and a score.
Hannah Vogel (2),
Caitlin Shannon,
Ella Callahan, and
Taylor Davis all added goals for the Black and Gold in the match.
Kaitlin Crouthamel made seven saves in her first career loss.
The Marauders have three days to rebound from the loss. Millersville travels to Erie, Pa. on Saturday to challenge the Mercyhurst Lakers at 11 a.m.
