Defense Powers Marauders to Victory Over Valkyries

Box Score Spartansburg, S.C. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team held the Converse Valkyries scoreless through the first 18 minutes of action and rolled to a 20-6 win on Saturday afternoon.

Millersville (3-0) had a trio of players score four goals each as the Marauders are now undefeated through their first three games for the second consecutive year. Seniors Caitlin Shannon and Brooke Fisher, along with junior Hannah Vogel, each had four goals. Freshman Renee Landis added three goals and two assists and has now recorded a hat trick in all three of her first collegiate games.

Converse (3-5) struggled to muster offense against the Black and Gold defense, totaling just 18 shots and six goals throughout the entire 60 minutes of action. The home team only targeted ten shots on goal and had just three players score during the match.

The homestanding Valkryies could not handle the Maruader opening attack as Millersville surged to a 9-0 lead to start play. Fisher, Shannon, and Vogel netted a goal apiece in the first nine minutes and gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The Black and Gold defense helped the visitors pull away by pressuring Converse into 10 first half turnovers. The Marauder defense didn't let the Valkyries score through the beginning 18-minutes of action, and limited the home team to three goals in each half.

Millersville lead 11-3 at halftime intermission and went on a 6-1 run to commence the second period powered by two goals from freshmen Landis and Jaime Damirgian during that span.

In the win the lacrosse team boasted a more diligent attack than in their other two victories this season. The Marauders turned the ball over a season low eight times and had five players notch a .500 shot percentage.

The Black and Gold will continue their spring break play by traveling to Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
