Millersville, Pa. - The shortest player of the floor made two of the biggest plays of the night for the Millersville Marauders.
Sam Light, a 5-10 freshman guard, grabbed a key rebound at the end of regulation and came up with a steal in overtime when Mansfield had an opportunity to tie, and the Marauders gritted out a 74-69 win.
Millersville (4-4, 1-2 PSAC East) had its heart broken just two nights earlier against Bowie State on a last-second 3-pointer. Light wasn't about to let it happen again. Mansfield's Andreas Katopodis hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left in the extra period to cut Millersville's lead to 71-69.
Shawn Williams made one of two free throws to extend the lead to three, but Mansfield possessed the ball with a chance to tie. With six seconds remaining, Light picked the pocket of Katopodis, preserving the Marauders' third win in the last four games.
The Marauders needed key defensive plays on a night when they struggled shooting. They converted a season-low 30.9 percent of their shots but offset it by forcing Mansfield into 21 turnovers and turning those into 20 points.
Kelvin Parker, who scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting on Monday, managed just 2-of-15 shooting and did not score in the final 25 minutes.
Eddie Callender and
Shawn Williams picked up the slack with 13 points apiece after halftime.
It was the fifth consecutive match-up between Millersville and Mansfield that ended in a score decided by single digits. It was also the second overtime game in the last four meetings.
Tommy Patterson and Parker gave Millersville a 5-0 lead, and the Marauders remained in front by no more than seven and by as few as one until Katopodis gave Mansfield its first lead (47-45) on a 3-pointer with 13:44 to play. The lead changed hands nine more times in regulation. With 2:52 to play in regulation, Callender made one of two from the line to tie the game at 63. Charles Pemberton, who led all players with 21 points and 12 rebounds, scored off a drive and dish from Katopodis with 2:01 left. Callender retied the game, following a
Tyree Smith miss with an offensive rebound and putback.
Mansfield came up empty on its final try of regulation. Katopodis missed a three, and three-time All-PSAC East honoree Joe Bell missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Marauders took possession with 55 seconds left and nearly ran out the shot clock before Light hoisted a floater. The shot missed but Light tied up the loose ball and secured it for one final Millersville chance. After letting the clock tick to six seconds, Williams drove hard to the hope and his runner caromed away as time expired.
Overtime belonged to the Marauders, though. Williams hit a triple for the first points of the extra period, and Callender hit a bucket on the next trip. Millersville extended the lead to 71-66 with 32 seconds to go before Katopodis hit his three, setting the stage for Light's heroic steal.
For the fourth time in eight games, four Marauders scored in double figures. Callender registered his first double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Williams totaled 13 points, five assists and four steals. Smith totaled 14 points and six rebounds, and Light totaled ine points, hitting all seven of his free throws.
The Marauders travel to Kutztown Saturday for a PSAC East contest beginning at 3 p.m.
