East Stroudsburg, Pa. -Â When the Millersville women's basketball team and East Stroudsburg face off, it's never a pretty affair and Saturday was no exception. The Marauders led by just one, 50-49 with 14 seconds remaining before
Carly Gallagher iced the 52-49 win with two free throws and 12 seconds on the clock.
Ryann Fiascki and Allison Howard each proceeded to miss a 2-pointer for the Warriors (1-1, 1-1 PSAC East) before
Alexis Martin secured the final rebound and Millersville (3-1, 1-1 PSAC East) avenged last season's first round PSAC Tournament loss to East Stroudsburg. The Koehler Fieldhouse showdown saw a total of 39 turnovers and the two teams combined to shoot just 30-of-96 (31.3 percent) from the field and 34-for-52 (65.4 percent) at the free throw line.
With 16:08 to play in the game, the Marauders had opened up their largest lead of the game and led by 12, 32-20. The home team then used a 19-10 run over the course of the next 7:49 and only trailed by three, 42-39 with 8:19 to go in the contest. After the teams exchanged layups, Millersville regained momentum with a small 5-2 fury of its own and was back up by six, 49-43. The Wariors weren't done though as they scored six of the next seven points to cut it to one, 50-49 and Gallagher's game-sealing free throws came next.
ESU only made two of its final eight field goal attempts and during that same stretch, the away team was 8-of-10 at the free throw line despite missing all three of its shots from the floor.
The visitors opened the game on a 12-5 run and during that stretch,
Aunjel Van Brakle poured in six of her nine points, all of which came in the first half. East Stroudsburg then tallied five of the next seven points and trailed by just four, 14-10. The Marauders ended the first period on an 11-4 run to go into the intermission up 11, 25-14 and Gallagher was responsible for five points in that stretch.Â
Free throws helped Millersville to maintain its lead all afternoon as the Marauders went 22-of-35 at the charity stripe. Those are the most free throw makes for Millersville since Dec. 7, 2013 against none other than East Stroudsburg (27). The Marauders hadn't attempted that many free throws since Nov. 9, 2013 against California (Pa.) (41).
For the third time in four games and five of the last six dating back to the end of last season, Gallagher led Millersville in scoring with 13 points, nine of which came at the free throw line. The East Stroudsburg, Pa., native missed much of the second half with foul trouble. The other Marauder in double figures for Millersville was Martin with 10 points to go with a team-leading eight rebounds.
Sabina Mehmedovic only scored two points but tied a career high in steals with four to go with a season high three assists and two rebounds.
Yasmin Cooper turned in six points, seven boards and two blocked shots.
