Millersville, Pa. - Katelyn Zapp scored two goals, and
Lauren Sotzin set a Millersville record with her 28th career shutout in Saturday's 3-0 home win over Bloomsburg.
Millersvile (14-2, 10-2 PSAC) earned its fifth consecutive win over Bloomsburg (5-10, 3-9 PSAC). Sotzin made one save but withstood a series of six consecutive penalty corners mid-way through the second half to earn her ninth shutout of the season. It moved her past Stacey Hollinger into first place in Millersville history. Sotzin also holds the record for career wins.
With Sotzin anchoring the defense, Zapp and
Lauren Gerhart provided the offensive punch. Zapp and Gerhart connected for the first score just 1:08 into the game. Gerhart was on the goal scoring end of
Hannah Whitman's assist at the 9:55 mark, giving the Marauders a 2-0 lead early.
Bloomsburg rarely threatened, earning just one penalty corner in the first half. It wasn't until the 49th minute that Bloomsburg produced its best scoring chance. The Huskies earned six corners in a row but the Millersville defense surrendered just three shots, one of which was saved.
Zapp scored her 12th goal of the season in the 60th minute when she scored off a pass from
Alicia Youtz.
Zapp's 12 goals are the most by a Marauder since 2005 and tied for the most since Dena Gockley scored 19 in 1994. Gerhart's goal and assist gives her three goals and six assists in her last eight games.
Millersville travels to Kutztown on Nov. 5 and plays its regular season home finale on Nov. 8 against Indiana (Pa.).
