Kutztown, Pa. - No. 2 Millersville field hockey kept Kutztown off the board in more ways than one in Wednesday's 2-0 victory. Not only did the Marauders not allow a goal, they did not surrender a single shot or penalty corner to the Golden Bears.
Rachel Dickinson and
Katelyn Zapp provided the goal scoring for Millersville.
The Marauders (15-2, 11-2 PSAC) recorded 18 shots, nine shots on goal and 11 penalty corners while Kutztown (8-9, 6-7 PSAC) was limited to zeros in each column. It marked the first time since Oct. 1, 2011 that Millersville held a team without a shot. The Marauders now own a Division II-best 10 shutouts and have outscored their opponents 57-9.
Dickinson and Zapp, the team's leaders in points, scored first half goals that proved more than enough. Dickinson struck first at the 15:50 mark off assists from
Lauren Gerhart and
Kayla Bixler. Dickinson then provided the helper on Zapp's 13th goal of the season in the 34th minute.
Dickinson, with seven goals and eight assists from her defender position, has scored at least one point in 10 of the last 13 games. Zapp's 13 goals are the most by a Marauder since Dena Gockley's school record 19 in 1994. Gerhart's assist gave her six in the last seven games and eight on the season.
Millersville took nine shots and six penalty corners in each half.
Lauren Sotzin was credited with her 29th career shutout despite not facing a single shot. Kutztown keeper Kayla Denlinger made seven saves.
Millersville plays its regular season finale on Saturday at IUP. Senior Day festivities for the team's eight seniors will be held prior to the 1 p.m. game time.
