Millersville Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team snapped Shippensburg's four-game win streak with Megan Newmister's goal that led to a 1-0 decision at Pucillo Field Wednesday evening.
Shippensburg (3-4-3, 3-4-3 PSAC) posted a 15-12 shot advantage and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks but the Marauders (6-4-0, 6-4-0 PSAC) received outstanding play in the net from goalkeeper
Olivia Webber. The redshirt junior stymied every Raider opportunity while corralling seven saves. Webber now firmly sits alone atop the PSAC in shutouts as she recorded her fifth of the season in the Marauder victory.
Millersville nearly scored in the opening minute of the match as
Kady Yoders deked a Shippensburg defender and had a one-on-one opportunity with keeper Kayla Kennedy. Yoders was able to beat Kennedy to her right, but the ball sliced too much and clanked into the cross bar and rolled right into the outstretched arms of Kennedy.
The Marauders finally scored in the 58th minute when Newmister received a flick pass from
Taylor Sprenkle that left her all alone inside the Raider box. The freshman midfielder sent the ball into the top corner of the net for her first career goal.
Coach
Mike O'Brien's squad has an off-weekend and returns to action Tuesday when it hosts the No. 6-ranked East Stroudsburg Warriors. The match provides a wonderful opportunity for the Marauders to knock off another nationally-ranked team. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. on Pucillo Field.
