Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team scored in the second minute of play but it wasn't able to hold onto the lead. The Marauders fell 3-2 to East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday afternoon at Pucillo Field.
Â
The Warriors improved to 11-1 overall and are 10-1 in PSAC action. They earned their 11th straight victory and are currently ranked No. 6 in the current NSCAA Division II poll that was released earlier today. Millersville (6-5, 6-5 PSAC) stayed with the top team in the PSAC all afternoon, but it just didn't have enough firepower to keep pace.
Â
Alexandrea Powell scored at the 2:00 mark, and it was only the third time all season East Stroudsburg fell behind in the game. Powell received a pass inside the box from Megan Newmister and fired a laser past Warrior goalkeeper Jules Harris for her second goal of 2014. But the Warriors answered right back as sophomore midfielder Shea Neal finished off a back-and-forth play started by forward Sammi Jo Hughes to tie the game 1-1 at the 3:13 mark.
Â
East Stroudsburg pulled ahead late in the first half when defender Amanda Vojta delivered a perfect corner kick, which connected with teammate Brielyn Hackett who headed it past Marauder goalkeeper
Olivia Webber in the 32nd minute. The Warriors held onto the 2-1 lead through halftime.
Â
The Warriors were able to add an insurance effort in the 55th minute when Amanda Vojta scored her first colligate goal directly on a corner kick. Vojta was able to spin the ball just enough that it dipped past the outstretched arms of
Olivia Webber and into the back of the net.
Â
Millersville made things interesting at the 70:55 mark when sophomore defender
Kaylie Cutlip scored her first collegiate goal. Cutlip gained outstanding positioning within the penalty box and headed a
Emily Purcell corner past Jules Harris.
Â
Today's match was the first time East Stroudsburg has allowed more than two goals in a single contest all season. For the game, the Warriors out-shot Millersville 19-12 and also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Millersville now has it sights set on the No. 11-ranked West Chester squad. The Rams were just able to sneak by Shippensburg 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 at Rockwell Field in West Chester. Kickoff is scheduled at 12 p.m.
