Marauder Volleyball Sweeps Shippensburg for First Time Since 2002

Millersville, Pa. - Not only did the Millersville volleyball team sweep Shippensburg for the first time since 2002, it hadn't defeated the Raiders since 2011 who owned a seven-match win streak in the all-time series entering Tuesday's meeting inside Pucillo Gymnasium.

The Marauders (12-15, 5-13 PSAC) came back from a deficit of at least four points in both the second and third sets in a match that saw 19 ties and 11 lead changes. Shippensburg's (14-14, 7-11 PSAC) win streak was snapped at four but the Raiders have won just three of their last 10 matches away from Heiges Field House.

This showdown was a defensive struggle as neither team hit well offensively and there were a total of 18 blocks recorded. Shippensburg hit just .123 and Millersville's attacking percentage was .118.

The first period opened with a 4-1 run by the home team and it held the lead until the Raiders tied the score up at 8-8. The Marauders then scored three straight to go up 11-8 but the away team answered with four of its own and was up 12-11 before Millersville called a timeout. The Marauders scored eight of the next 12 points and were up 19-16 and Shippensburg used a timout of its own. Out of the breather, the Raiders reclaimed a 21-20 lead with a 5-1 fury. Millersville drew the line there though and scored the final five points of the stanza to win it by four.

Shippensburg began the second set on a 7-1 run and controlled the momentum with a 10-5 lead. The Marauders then embarked on a 12-4 run to go up 17-14. During that stretch, both Erin Harman and Kayla Wallace sent home two kills apiece. After a Shippensburg timeout, the Raiders used a 6-3 run of their own to tie the period up at 20-20. Millersville called a timeout and then scored the final five points to win the stanza and go up two sets to none.

The visitors controlled the beginning of the third period 7-3 and held the lead until the Marauers were able to tie the score up at 14-14. That tie came in the midst of an 8-2 run for the hosts and they climbed out to an 18-15 advantage. The run was fueled by three Katie Lesinski kills. Shippensburg proceeded to score six straight and was back on top, 21-18. From that point on, Millersville scored eight of the final 11 points to take the first stanza by two and the match in straight sets.

Wallace led the Marauder attack with a .400 hitting percentage that included 10 kills and only two errors on 20 swings. Victoria Biggins registered 32 assists, Brooklyn Smith tallied 30 digs and Wallace assisted in seven blocks.

Friday, Millersville will travel to Kutztown for a 7 p.m. match against the Golden Bears.
