Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team had no problem taking care of business on Friday night inside Pucillo Gymnasium as it swept Cheyney in straight sets. The Marauders hadn't played a home match since Oct. 4 against Kutztown and were glad to be back.
Millersville (11-14, 4-12 PSAC) registered a red-hot hitting percentage of .247 to just .032 by the Wolves (1-23, 0-16 PSAC) who have now lost 21 straight this season including an 0-8 mark on the road. The Marauders hit over .200 as a team for the first time since that win over the Golden Bears on Oct. 4.
The home team opened the first set on a 10-3 run thanks in part to three kills from
Kelsi Ceriani and a pair of service aces by the team leader in that category,
Taylor Smith. Millersville then pushed its lead to as many as 12, 21-9, before Cheyney reeled off four straight and forced the Marauders to call a timeout. Out of the breather, Millersville scored four in a row to take the first stanza by 12 points as it was their best offensive period of the night with a .296 attacking percentage.
The second set was the closest one of the match as it saw four ties and two lead changes. It began with a 5-2 run by the hosts but the visitors battled back to tie the stanza up at 7-7. After two more ties, the Marauders took control with a 13-3 run and were up 23-13. The spark that helped to light that fire was provided by six service aces including three apiece from
Victoria Biggins and
Taylor Smith as well as three
Kayla Wallace kills. After the away team took three of four points, Millersville scored the final point to take the period by nine points and a two sets to none lead.
The Wolves stormed out to a 4-1 lead in the third set, but from that point on, the Marauders used a 24-6 run to take the set and the match.
Offensively, Wallace led the way with eight kills and Biggins tallied 25 assists. On the defensive side, both Biggins and
Brooklyn Smith had eight digs and above the net,
Mary Paul assisted in two blocks. Millersville accumulated a season-high in service aces with 18, its most since Nov. 10, 2012 at Cheyney (21). Freshman
Alexis Hamm was the ringleader in that category with a career-high six and had them all in one set. Prior to Friday, she had never earned more than one in a single match.
The Marauders are home again on Saturday to face West Chester beginning at 1 p.m.
