Box Score Bloomsburg, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team lost the final game of the 2013 season in dramatic fashion to Bloomsburg, 14-12.
Millersville (9-7, 4-7 PSAC) junior
Brooke Fisher scored four times against the Huskies and set a career high with 48 goals. Fisher's 48 scores is the most that a Marauder has accumulated in one year since Liz Weekly scored a program best 68 goals in 2009. Teammate
Hannah Vogel also put four shots into the back of the net, while senior goalkeeper
Lauren Mateja nabbed her eighth double-digit save total of the year with 12 stopped shots in the loss.
Bloomsburg (9-7, 7-4 PSAC) secures the fifth seed in next week's PSAC Championships with the win. The Huskies received a combine eight goals from Marisa Moley and Maggie Canavan in the victory. Goalie Sara Bates saved 10 Marauder shots on the day.
Despite losing to the Huskies, Millersville has plenty to be proud of this year. Second year head coach
Mia Hall led the team to its best record in 12 years. Fisher (48), Vogel (46), and
Caitlin Shannon (41) are the first three Marauders to score 40-plus goals in the same season. The 308 points scored (goals and assists combined) and the 221 goals scored are the most in school history.
The beginning of the game did not lack any offensive power as both teams scored a combined 11 goals in just over the first 11 minutes of play with Bloomsburg holding a slight 6-5 advantage.
The defense took over for the final 19 minutes as each team only scored a single goal before the half. If it was not for Canavan's goal with 11 seconds remaining in the half the game would have been knotted at six. However, Bloomsburg carried the one point lead into the break.
After falling behind by two goals early in the second period, Millersville scored three consecutive times to take a 10-9 lead with only 16 minutes remaining in the game. Fisher (2) and Mack (1) accounted for the three goals and placed the Marauders in a position to defeat the Huskies for the first time since 2001.
The Huskies began their comeback in the final seven minutes of the game. Four goals by Bloomsburg over the span of 1:27 pushed the home team's lead to three with less than four minutes remaining.
A late goal by Vogel pulled the Black and Gold within two scores, but Bloomsburg gained possession and ran out the clock to end the game and the Marauders' season.
Hall and the rest of the women's lacrosse team can be excited about 2014 as the Marauders are returning 10 of the top-11 scorers from this year.
