Marauders Snap 12-Year Drought with Victory Over Ship

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - In just her second season as Millersville women's lacrosse head coach, Mia Hall has guided the Marauders to a feat that had not been accomplished in over a decade. With a 17-12 win over Shippensburg on Tuesday afternoon the Marauders have won nine games for the first time since 2001.

Millersville's (9-6, 4-6 PSAC) nine wins is the most since the 2001 team won 10. The victory also assures the Marauders their first winning season in five years. Hannah Vogel led the home team with five goals on seven shots. Caitlin Shannon also tallied five points on four goals and an assist against the Raiders. Goalkeeper Lauren Mateja recorded her second-best save total this season with 15 stopped shots.

Vogel (42) and Shannon (41) joined leading scorer Brooke Fisher (44) as Marauders with more than 40 goals this season. It is the first time since Millersville began archiving goals per season in 2004 that three players have reached the 40-goal mark in the same season.

Shippensburg (5-11, 3-7 PSAC) is eliminated from the postseason with the loss. The Raiders saw seven different players score in the game with Bennett Widlake leading the way with three goals. Goalie Ally Frymoyer recorded seven saves and five groundballs in the defeat.

In 2012, Shippensburg scored the games first five goals and seven of the first eight. The Marauders found themselves in a similar scenario in 2013 with the Raiders taking a 5-1 lead just over 10 minutes into play.

Fisher sparked the comeback for Millersville with her shot and goal right in front of Frymoyer off of a pass from Kathryn Kehring in the first half. The junior's score at the 18:42 mark in the first period began a 6-0 Marauder run over the next 14 minutes of play.

Two goals by Shippensburg almost tied the game at the half. However, Vogel received a pass from Ella Callahan with five seconds to play before the break. She spun to her right around a defender and beat Frymoyer to the right side to give the Black and Gold a one point advantage at halftime.

The team's traded goals for the first 15-minutes of the second period before the Marauders took their game to the next level.

Millersville looked like a team possessed as they controlled nearly all of the draw controls, played exceptional defense, and wasted little time pulling away from Shippensburg in the closing minutes of the second period. The Marauders had six different players record a point over a span of 3:15 and they scored four goals in that same amount of time to take a 16-11 lead with under five minutes remaining.

Shippensburg scored one last time, but the Marauders did not relinquish possession in the final two minutes and senior Ashley Henderson put the icing on the cake by scoring her final goal on Chryst Field with 10 seconds left to give Millersville the 17-12 win.

It was the first time that Henderson and anyone else on this team tasted victory over Shippensburg as the Marauders suffered six-straight defeats to the Raiders prior to today's contest.

Unfortunately for Millersville, Bloomsburg defeated East Stroudsburg 16-9 and eliminated the Marauders from postseason contention. Millersville still plays a vital role in the postseason as the team travels to Bloomsburg on Saturday for its final game of the 2013 season. The outcome of that game will decide if Bloomsburg or Gannon receives either the five or six seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
