Marauders Score Early and Often in Season Opening Win

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Sophomore Hannah Vogel scored four goals and led the Millersville women's lacrosse team to an 18-5 defeat of Wilmington in the Marauders' home opener.

Millersville (1-0) had nine different players score in the game. Captains Ashley Henderson and Becky Donkin each tallied three goals and an assist, while 2012 leading goal scorer Caitlin Shannon started her junior campaign with three points on two goals and an assist. Kathryn Kehring dished out a team high three assists and senior Lauren Mateja was stout in goal with 10 saves.

Wilmington (0-4) received two goals from sophomore Megan Keffer as the Wildcats scored four of their five goals in the second period. Goalie Kaitlyn Hall recorded five saves in the contest.

Despite the cool temperature the Marauders started their season off hot by scoring the game's first 10 goals, and 15 of the first 16. The defense was just as impressive for Millersville as for only the third time since 1993 the team held its opponents to five goals or fewer in the season opener.

Just one minute and six seconds into the game Shannon put Millersville on the board. The attacker made two quick moves and darted to her right and beat Hall to give the Marauders the early advantage.

Vogel (2), Henderson (2), and Donkin each scored in the next 10 minutes to increase the lead to 6-0 over the Wildcats, only 12 minutes into the start of the season. Freshman Ella Callahan scored her first collegiate goal halfway through the first period to put the Marauders up by a comfortable 7-0 margin.

Millersville finished the rest of the first half on a 6-1 run to take a 13-1 lead at the break. The Marauders outshot the Wildcats 18-7 through the first half and tallied 11 more shots on goal. A big reason for the first half dominance was the 9-5 advantage in draw controls that resulted in huge disparity in time of possession for Millersville.

With the game comfortably in hand, the Marauders eased off the throttle in the second period. Rookie Abby Mack scored her first career goal in a black and gold uniform and helped the home team to a 5-4 advantage in goals in the final period.

Henderson led the team with four draw controls as the Marauders totaled 13 in the game to Wilmington's 11.

Second year head coach Mia Hall was able to play a number of underclassmen during the victory as all but five Marauders saw action in the game. For Hall, the 13 goal difference ties her largest margin of victory at the helm of Millersville women's lacrosse program. Last year, the Marauders defeated Colorado Mesa 19-6 at a nuetral site game in Ohio.

Millersville has now won four of its last six season openers and has outscored Wilmington 35-20 during the past two seasons.

The Marauders play at home again on Saturday, March 9 against Fort Lewis. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
