Battlers No Match for Marauders' Scoring Onslaught

Box Score Phillipi, W.Va. – Playing the team's first game in 10 days, Millersville had plenty of time to draw up a game plan for Alderson-Broaddus. Whatever head coach Mia Hall and her team came up with worked early and often. The Marauders routed the Battlers by a score of 23-1 Saturday afternoon, featuring 15 first-half goals.

Millersville now is 4-0 on the season for the first time since 1995. That team opened its campaign with five consecutive victories. Brooke Fisher led the way in goals with five and Becky Donkin totaled seven points (four goals and three assists) to lead the team in points. Lauren Mateja posted a shutout in one half of goalkeeping, the fewest she has given up in any start of her career.

The Marauders got on the board first with a goal from Hannah Vogel just under two minutes into action. After claiming a 1-0 lead, Millersville put five more goals on the board in less than three minutes, two by Fisher and two more by Caitlin Shannon to open a 6-0 lead on the Battlers. Fisher followed the five-goal explosion a few minutes later, backed by another Vogel goal, then Donkin struck again to make the score 9-0.

From that point, Millersville was on cruise control. The away team scored six more goals to close the half with a 15-0 advantage. Alderson-Broaddus scored first 7:15 into the second half to make the score 15-1, but any thought of a comeback was short-lived, as Abby Mack tallied her second goal of the day to make the lead 15 again just over a minute after the Battlers' only score of the day.

Donkin fired three of her goals in the second half, and Shannon's third goal of the game capped the scoring with just 32 seconds to play. Nine players scored a goal for the Marauders, with four players managing hat tricks in Fisher, Donkin, Shannon and Vogel. The 23 goals were the most the team has scored since hanging 25 on the board against Slippery Rock on Apr. 24, 2008 and the 22-goal margin of victory was the team's most lopsided win since topping The Rock 25-3 on Apr. 22, 2007.

The contest against Alderson-Broaddus was the team's first since mourning the passing of Seton Hill coach Kristie Quigley last Saturday when the Griffins' bus that was headed for Millersville crashed. The Marauders featured wristbands for the game that read “onelaxfamily” and the initials KQ to honor the late Quigley.

Putting the win over the Battlers in the rearview mirror, Millersville now turns its attention to its next opponent, Indiana (Pa.). The Marauders and Crimson Hawks clash at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on Mar. 27 in a 4 p.m. start time.
