Kutztown, Pa. - Day two of the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 Championships did not go as the Millersville Marauders hoped. Each of the four remaining wrestlers were denied in their bids to reach the national championships. The team finished in 11th place out of 14 teams.
Sam Oberlander, Zach Pincus, Dane Woodruff and Brad Ladd all survived day one and needed to finish no lower than fourth to reach the NCAA Division II Championships. Instead, Oberlander (125), Pincus (165) and Ladd (165) all finished sixth.
With two individual champions and eight total NCAA qualifiers, Newberry won the team championship, finishing just ahead of Pitt-Johnstown, which will send seven wrestlers to nationals. Millersville finished ahead of Anderson, Ohio Valley and American International in the team standings, but both Anderso and Ohio Valley will have one wrestlers advance to nationals.
Oberlander won his first match of the day by a medical forfeit, but for the second time in the tournament, he lost to Newberry's Jeff Vesta in a first round pin. With an opportunity move on to a fourth-place match, Oberlander was dropped by East Stroudsburg's Anthony Marino, 7-2.
Pincus entered the day just one win shy of the championship bout, but was pinned at 1:16 by Newberry's Blake Ridenour, who went on to win the weight class. Pincus dropped a 2-0 heartbreaker in the wrestlebacks to No. 2 seed Keith Ryan of Pitt-Johnstown and was eliminated when Shippensburg's Robert Scheivert pinned him in the first period.
Woodruff lasted just one match on the day, falling by pin to Newberry's Joseph Pittman.
Ladd was victorious in his first bout, winning by a 2-1 decision to advance to the consolation semis. Newberry's Robert Wade edged Ladd by a 6-1 decision, and Ladd was then eliminated when American International's Matt Pringle caught him for an early pin.
The super region championships conclude Millersville's 2012-13 season. Ladd is one of two seniors on the squad and finished his Marauder career with 49 wins including 20 this season and 38 over the last two.
