Box Score Millersville, Pa. – One goal was not enough on Sunday afternoon when the No. 4 Millersville Marauders took on the No. 25 Charleston Golden Eagles. Millersville took seven more shots than the Golden Eagles and had six more corner kicks, but Charleston ended the game in the category that matters most: goals.

In a battle of the defending PSAC and WVIAC champions, Charleston (1-0-1) controlled play early and a created few opportunities off of free kicks that were threatening, but the Millersville (1-1) defense along with goalkeeper Christopher Schneider stifled each of the attacks. The most dangerous came in the 17th minute when Charleston defender Jordan Lavender headed a corner kick towards the left post. Millersville midfielder Jeramey Robbins reached out and saved the ball right on the goal line to prevent the Golden Eagles from scoring.

Charleston was able to break through in the 22nd minute when Brett Elliot used every bit of his 6-foot 3-inch frame to leap up and head a free kick into the lower left ninety just past the diving reach of Schneider.

The first half ended with Charleston leading 1-0 despite being outshot by the Marauders 7-6.

When the second half began the intensity heightened, and the Marauders started to take control of the game. Millersville forced the Golden Eagles to play nine to 10 players in the defensive third with multiple scoring opportunities.

With just under 15 minutes of play junior Ryan Rohrer created space on the left wing and sent a cross into the box towards a streaking Matt Kadoch. Kadoch struck the ball out of the air directly towards the goal. Charleston keeper Sean Teepen was able to make the save but was  unable to secure the ball. Forward William Taylor followed up the rebound shot and tapped the ball into the back of the net tying the game at one.

Less than two minutes later the Golden Eagles stole the momentum back on a long pass from Rob Vincent to Nathan Schmitt. Schmitt outran the Marauder defense to the ball and placed the ball right pass Schneider for the 2-1 advantage.

Millersville had several scoring chances in the waning minutes but the Marauder offense could not put the ball into the cage. Millersville even brought Schneider to the offensive end during the final minutes, but even the extra man was not enough. 

Millersville returns to action on Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. against Seton Hill for its third straight home match. Last season the Maraduers defeated Seton Hill 5-0.
