Box Score Millersville, Pa. - After an up-and-down 2-2 start to the season, the men's soccer team may have just found its groove with its latest effort on the field. The Marauders rolled visiting District of Columbia in convincing fashion Monday night, winning by a 5-0 score.
Millersville was boosted by two goals each from a pair of newcomers in freshman
Jaime Vazquez and junior
William Taylor. Vazquez notched his third and fourth of the season, and Taylor knocked in his second and third to put the exclamation point on a one-sided game.
While the Marauders had plenty of chances to the tune of 19 total shots, nine on goal, the Firebirds helped Millersville at the outset. UDC shot itself in the foot early by putting an own-goal past starting keeper Omar Gonzalez to put the Marauders on the board.
From there, Vazques and Taylor took over. Vazquez punched in his first goal of the game in the 16th minute to increase the lead to 2-0. After going into the break with that lead, the home team made sure it closed the game in strong fashion.
In the 74th minute, Vazquez struck again, this time off an original shot from Taylor. Gonzalez made a diving save on Taylor's initial attempt, but Vazquez was right there to clean up for his fellow freshman by flicking the ball off his heel and into the back of the net.
Taylor put the stamp on Millersville's third win of the year with goals in the 82nd minute and in the 87th minute. He also assisted on Vazquez's second goal to give him three points for the night.
As strong as the Marauder offense was in producing five goals, the defense was equally up to the task. The back line forced UDC into an offsides penalty and allowed just six total shots and one on target. Christopher Schneider got the nod in goal to start the game, and last year's freshman sensation
Brad Benzing came in to replace him in the second half. The team never missed a beat, though, and Benzing stopped the only shot that came his way in the second half.
The Marauders next game is slated for Wednesday, when Millersville travels to California (Pa.) to take on the No. 16 Vulcans in a critical PSAC showdown. Start time of that game is 3:30 p.m.
