Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team came back from six goals down to trail 10-7 at the half. The Marauder opened with the second period's first goal to cut the lead to two, but Mercyhurst proved to be too much as it raced out to a 20-12 victory on Saturday.
Over the first five minutes of regulation the teams exchanged the lead twice with three ties. Mercyhurst (10-5, 8-2 PSAC) then scored seven-straight goals after trailing 3-2 to take a 9-3 lead, its largest of the first half.
Millersville (5-10, 2-8 PSAC) quickly responded with three unanswered goals by
Ashley Henderson,
Caitlin Shannon and
Brooke Fisher to cut the deficit to three, down 9-6.
The Lakers found another goal with three minutes left before
Becky Donkin scored with 11 second remaining in the half to cut Mercyhurst's lead to 10-7.
Henderson scored 52 seconds into the second half on a free position shot to bring the Marauders within two of the Lakers.
Mercyhurst responded with six goals over the next six minutes of play to take a 16-8 advantage.
The Marauders pulled within six goals, down 17-11, after freshman
Jillian Dobbs fired home her first goal of the season on a free position shot with 13:16 remaining.
The Lakers scored three of the next four goals and continued to run the clock on the offensive zone with perimeter passing to secure a 20-12 win over the Marauders.
Fisher and Donkin both finished with a team-high three goals. Fisher also collect two assists for a team-high five points.
Millersville returns home on Monday, April 23 for its final regular season home game against Chestnut Hill at 4 p.m.
The Marauders recognized their only senior prior to today's game. Senior defender
Katie Moatz--seen below with her parents--played her final regular season home conference game today. Moatz came into today's game with 58, now 59, straight starts. She is also a four-time PSAC Scholar Athlete.
