East Stroudsburg, Pa. – East Stroudsburg scored seven unanswered goals in the final seven minutes of regulation after trailing by six to defeat Millersville by a score of 13-12 on Wednesday.
Millersville (5-7, 2-5 PSAC) took a six goal lead after back-to-back goals by
Caitlin Shannon and
Karen Illuminati for a 12-6 advantage with 8:18 remaining. Then the Warriors' offensive attack exploded for seven-straight goals.
East Stroudsburg (4-8, 2-5 PSAC) tied the game at 12-12 with 10 seconds remaining in regulation after trailing 12-6 with 8:18 left in the first half. Nicole Miller won the ensuing draw and fed the ball to Sarah Ginn with six seconds remaining. Ginn found Grace Gunkel for what would be the game-winner with two seconds remaining and a 13-12 lead.
Miller started the surge with less than seven minutes in regulation with two goals in a span of 31 seconds. Gunkel followed with three-straight goals of her own to cut Millersville's lead to 12-11 before Brandi Smith notted it at 12-12. Gunkel finished with the game winner and a game-high seven goals, including six in the second half and four in the final 1:59.
The Marauders took a 7-2 halftime lead with junior
Ashley Henderson scoring four of them. Millersville was able to push its lead to 10-3 in the second half on three-straight goals to begin the period. East Stroudsburg responded with three unanswered goals of its own to cut the lead to 10-6.
Henderson finished the game with four goals to lead the Marauders. Illuminati and Shannon both finished with three goals apiece.
Millersville returns home Saturday, April 14 when it hosts Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
