Shepherdstown, W.Va. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team came within one goal of Shepherd late in the first half, but the Rams outscored the Marauders 10-8 in the second to defeat Millersville 21-16, staying undefeated.
Shepherd (5-0) got on the board first just over a minute into the contest when Hanna Wharton delivered a pass to Nicole Ruane for a 1-0 lead. Millersville (0-2) wasted no time scoring one minute later on an unassisted goal by
Kathryn Kehring.
The Rams scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead with 24:34 remaining in the first half.
Caitlin Shannon brought the Marauders back within 3-2 on a free position goal with 22:51 on the clock.
Shepherd pushed its lead to 7-3 with 17:00 left in the first half when Ruane scored her second goal of the game for the Rams. It was Shepherd's largest lead of the half.
With 2:31 left in the opening half the Marauders came within 8-7 of the Rams after
Becky Donkin fed
Hannah Vogel for her first goal of the contest. Shepherd extended its lead to 11-8 before the first half horn sounded.
Ashley Henderson scored her third goal of the first half with 21 seconds left before the Rams scored with one second left in the half to take the three-point advantage into the break.
The Marauders scored just over two minutes into the first half on an unassisted goal by Shannon to make it an 11-9 Shepherd lead. The Rams then scored six of the next seven goals to take its largest lead of the game at 17-10 with 22:20 remaining in regulation.
Henderson's fifth goal, second of the half, started a 4-1 Millersville charge over the next 11 minutes to come within four goals of Shepherd, down 18-14 with 11:22 left. Donkin and
Alexis Sutton both scored on free position shots before Vogel picked up her second goal of the game unassisted.
The Rams scored three-straight goals over the next seven minutes to take a 21-14 lead with 4:52 left in regulation.
The Marauders put two more in the back of the net before the final buzzer to fall 21-16.
Henderson led Millersville with a game-high five goals on seven shots, while going 2-of-3 on free position shots. Donkin also finished with two goals both coming on free position shots. Shannon, Kehring, Vogel and
Brooke Fisher also finished with two goals for Millersville. The Marauders were 7-of-12 on free positions in the game, while Shepherd was just 3-of-7.
Millersville returns to action on Tuesday, March 13 at Wilmington (Del.). The Marauders and Wildcats are set to face off at 3 p.m.
