Lacrosse Wins Home Opener for Third Straight

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team won its home opener against Mercy by a score of 17-10 at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium on Saturday. It was the team's third-straight victory.

Brooke Fisher scored 1:36 into regulation on a free position shot to give Millersville (3-2) a 1-0 lead. Mercy (0-3)  responded with a free position shot of its own two minutes later, and then the Mavericks scored a man-up goal to take a 2-1 lead. It was the only time Mercy led in the game.

The Marauders tied the game at 2-2 when Fisher scored her second goal on a pass from Ashley Henderson. Over the next 15 minutes the Marauders scored six more goals for seven unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead with 8:15 left in the first half. Henderson led the surge with two goals.

The Mavericks found two goals by Julie Darnulc, giving her three in the half, to bring the score to 8-4 in favor of Millersville with 6:35 remaining. But the Marauders were not done.

Millersville closed out the half with four unanswered goals to take a 12-4 halftime lead. Kathryn Kehring registered the first two to give her a first-half hat trick. Caitlin Shannon added her second of the game before Henderson scored her third of the half with nine seconds remaining with a man advantage.

The Marauders pushed their lead to 15-4 in the opening minutes of the second half on goals by Karen Illuminati, Fisher and Henderson. Millersville scored twice more to take a 17-6 lead with 10:23. Freshman Ruth Costanzo scored her first goal of the season to give the Marauders the 11-point lead on their second man-up advantage of the contest.

Mercy made a surge in the final five minutes of regulation scoring four unanswered goal but was not able to get any closer.

The Marauders captured their third-straight win since starting the season 0-2 with a 17-10 decision over the Mavericks.

Henderson finished the game with four goals and an assist and now has 15 goals and 17 points on the season to lead Millersville.

Fisher and Kehring both finished with three goals each, while Kehring collected two assists and Fisher added one. Becky Donkin and Shannon both added two goals.

Millersville goalkeeper Lauren Mateja (3-2) earned her third win of the season with this one having importance. Mateja, a Mercy transfer, faced her former team for the first time since joining Millersville last season. The Marauders are now 2-0 all-time against the Mavericks.

The Marauders remain home on Tuesday, March 20 when they host the No. 4 Lock Haven Bald Eagles. Millersville and Lock Haven are set to begin at 4 p.m.
