New Castle, Pa. – Millersville held on to defeat previously undefeated Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday after the Wildcats came back from four goals down with four minutes left in regulation. The Marauders scored in the final minutes to hold on for their first win of the season by a score of 17-15.
Sophomore
Caitlin Shannon scored her fifth goal of the game to give Millersville (1-2) a 16-12 lead with 9:50 remaining in regulation. It was the fourth time the Marauders took a four-goal lead against Wilmington (2-1) in the game.
The Wildcats then scored back-to-back goals in a span of 40 seconds to come within 16-14 of the Marauders with 8:16 remaining. Wilmington found a third-straight goal four minutes later when Meggan Apgar scored her third goal of the game to cut the Millersville lead to one, down 16-15.
Karen Illuminati matched Apgar by scoring her third goal of the game with 2:36 left in regulation to give the Marauders a 17-15 lead and eventual win.
Millersville and Wilmington exchanged a pair of goals in the opening four minutes of the contest to knot the game at 2-2.
Kathryn Kehring scored first for Millersville just 1:08 into regulation with an unassisted goal. Jaclyn Hall tied the game 20 seconds later on a free position shot.
The Marauders took a 5-2 lead with three-consecutive goals in a span of three minutes.
Ashley Henderson started things off with her sixth goal of the season. One minute later
Brooke Fisher added a free position goal and then Shannon, scoring her second goal of the contest, scored unassisted for Millersville's fifth goal of the game. Shannon finished the first half with three goals.
The Wildcats came back within one of the Marauders, down 6-5 with 13:08 in the first, before Millersville went on another charge. The Marauders strung together another three-consecutive goal streak this time in a span of two minutes to take its largest lead of the half, up 9-5. The teams would exchange a pair of goals to end the half 10-7 in favor of Millersville.
Henderson scored her second goal of the game just 35 seconds into the second half to give the Marauders an 11-7 lead. Freshman
Hannah Vogel scored two minutes later to extend Millersville's lead to 12-8. Millersville maintained its four-goal lead at 14-10 and then 16-12 before the Wildcats made a final push.
Shannon finished with a game-high five goals and now shares a team-leading seven goals on the season with Henderson. Henderson finished the game with two goals and an assist.
Fisher and Illuminati both finished the game with hat tricks, while Kehring collected two goals and one assist.
Millersville travels to Urbana, Ohio on Thursday, March 15 for a neutral site game against Colorado Mesa at 1 p.m. The Marauder return home on Saturday, March 17 for their first home game of the season against Mercy College at 1 p.m.
