New York City, NY – In the second day of the New Balance Invitational in New York City on Saturday, the Marauders saw two runners qualify for PSAC Championships.
Both runners came from the men's team in James McBride and Kevin Diflorio. McBride's qualifying time came in the 5,000-meter run, where he placed 19th with a time of 15:11.18. The time for McBride is also the top time by any Marauder this season by a wide margin.
McBride topped the time ran by Zach Mains last weekend at the Bison Open by more than 30 seconds. Mains' time of 15:46.64 had been the top time. Last year in the PSAC Indoor Championships, McBride ran the 5,000-meter in a time of 14:39.53.
Diflorio qualified for the PSAC Indoor Championships with a time of 1:58.31 in the 800-meter run. Diflorio was just three seconds off Brad Stevens' school record set in 2000 and also set a personal best in the event, beating his best time from last year of 2:00.17. This run placed him 53rd in the field.
Coming in 11 spots behind Diflorio was teammate Seth Hibbs, whose time of 2:01.03 just missed qualifying for the PSAC Championships. Hibbs was just shy of his own personal best that he set last year with a time of 2:00.48.
From the women's team, Harlee Staller competed for the second day in a row. One day after finishing in 50th place in the long jump, Staller placed 26th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.17 meters. Not only is that a career-best for the freshman, but also a team-best distance so far this season, edging out Katherine Lennex's 11.14-meter distance from last weekend.
Whitney Savoy and Lennex also took part in the triple jump. Savoy placed nine spots behind Staller in 35th place. Her distance of 10.75 meters is short of her 11.06-meter first place finish in the first competition of the season in Lehigh on Dec. 2. Lennex was not able to record a finish, fouling her three attempts.
Like the men's team, the women also had two runners in the 800-meter race. Brittney Martin and Megan Meyer finished within one second of each other, with Martin placing 54th and Meyer in 57th in the 73-woman field. Martin registered a time of 2:21.59, topping her own season-best time of 2:23.94 last weekend.
Meyer, with a 2:22.13 finish also toppled her season best that she set last weekend when she ran a time of 2:23.95. In last weekend's competition, Martin and Meyer also were right next to each other in the final standings, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Marauders are back in action next weekend with two different competitions on the schedule. On Feb. 10, they return to New York City for the Lafayette Rider Winter Games. On the following day, Feb. 11, the team returns to Lewisburg for the Bucknell Winter Classic. Both events are limited squad events.
