Lewisburg, Pa. – The Marauders competed in their second straight meet on Saturday at Bucknell and the relay teams and distance runs highlighted the day for Millersville in the Winter Classic.
The women's 4x400-meter 'A' team finished in second place with a 4:04.39 time. The team comprised of Megan Meyer, Brittney Martin, Janna Richards and Sarah Mulvey ran the third-fastest time in the event in school history. The second-place finish was the best of any event on the day for Millersville.
Men's distance was represented well by James McBride, who placed second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:34.58. That tops McBride's season- and career-best time by 10 seconds from two weekends ago and is also the fourth-fastest time run in school history. Following McBride in the event, Zach Mains placed 17th with a time of 9:08.03.
Brad Slaughter also ran well enough in the 5,000-meter to log a fourth-place finish. His time of 15:33.42 is the second-fastest time of the season for the team, following only McBride's 15:11.80 finish in last weekend's New Balance Invitational.
The women's short distance also saw a PSAC qualifier, as Mercedes Ortiz ran the 60-meter dash in a time of 8.24 seconds, a personal best for the freshman. Ortiz, however, just missed the final cut for the event, as an 8.15-second time was needed to qualify.
One Marauder that did make the women's cut for the 60-meter dash was Katherine Lennex, whose qualifying time of 8.03 seconds ties a season-best for the Marauders with Harlee Staller, who set the mark yesterday in the Lafayette Rider Winter Games. Lennex finished the final heat with a time of 8.04 seconds, one hundredth of a second over her qualifying time. That finish was good enough for a tie for third place in the event.
Another high-placer for the Marauders was Melvin Fields, who competed in the triple jump and finished with a fifth-place distance of 13.20 meters. That jump is seven-hundredths of a meter short of Fields' season best, set in Dec. at Lehigh.
Millersville again competes in two separate meets next weekend. On Friday, Feb. 17, the team goes to Susquehanna to compete and on Saturday, the team travels to Princeton for the Princeton Invitational.
