Millersville, Pa. - It took only five minutes for the game to go from Millersville win, to tie, to loss. The Marauder men's soccer team gave up two goals in the final five minutes to lose a non-conference game to Wilmington 2-1 on Wednesday nght.
Millersville (5-5) receieved a goal from junior captain Colby Zeger four minutes into the second period. Offensively, Millersville was led by Zeger, who totaled three of the Marauders 14 shots. Chris Schneider played the entire game and notched three saves for Millersville.
Wilmington (6-6) gathered goals from Lance Berry and Kresimir Nurnberger. Wildcat goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis also recorded three saves in the game.
The first half was rather uneventful as neither team could generate any threatening opportunities and the game entered halftime at a 0-0 tie.
Just four minutes into the second period Zeger pushed up from his defensive position and blasted in a shot from 30-yards out. It was Zeger's first goal of the season and it gave the Marauders the 1-0 advantage.
As the half progressed it seemed that Wilmington would not be able to score as it was held scoreless for nearly 85 minutes of play. Lance Berry, a game-time decision to start, swung the momentum in the Wildcats' favor with five minutes to play. Berry collected a long pass at the 18 and took a few touches before firing a shot on goal. Berry's shot was just over the reach of Schnieder and glanced off the crossbar and into the net creating the 1-1 tie.
As quickly as the Wildcats tied it, they took their first lead of the game with only 1:32 remaining. This time it was Nurnberger who took a shot at Schnieder. Schnieder made the first save but the rebound fell to Nurnsberger who placed the second shot into the cage giving Wilmington the 2-1 victory. The loss marked the first time that Millersville has lost three consecutive games in Steve Widdowson's six seasons as a head coach.
Millersville looks to get back on track and end its current three-game skid when the host West Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m.
