Marauders Drop 13-3 Decision to No. 13 Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg, Pa. – Bloomsburg used a balanced offensive attack in which eight players scored to drop Millersville 13-3 Saturday afternoon at Sports Stadium. The Marauders fell to 4-7overall and 2-6 in the PSAC with the loss, while Bloomsburg improved to 7-6 and 4-4 in conference play.

The Huskies took control of the game early and opened up with a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into action. Bloomsburg then extended the lead with three more goals to take a 7-0 advantage into halftime.

The nationally ranked club exploded on the offensive end, out-shooting Millersville 20-4 in the first period, and 33-13 overall. The Huskies also put the pressure on defensively and forced 13 Marauder turnovers before the break and 10 in the second half.

Bloomsburg netted three-straight goals to start the second period when Millersville's seniors answered with three tallies of their own. Kelsey Schmoltze notched MU's first score on a free position shot at the 21:55 mark to put the Marauders on the board.

Mary Houtmann followed four minutes later to cut the deficit to eight. Capping off Millersville's run with the squad's final goal, Morgan Mangiaruga found the back of the net mid-way through the half for a 10-3 score. All three of the Marauders' goals were unassisted.

The Huskies countered the MU run, however, and closed out the half with three more goals. Sam Mazzie led all scorers with four Bloomsburg goals, and Sarah Bennett and Kelsey Metzler each scored two. Husky goalkeeper Shelby Iezzi recorded six saves and Sara Bates had two.

Millersville's Courtney Haggerty stopped 10 shots in the net and Lauren Mateja set aside one. Amanda Mattera registered game-highs with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.

The Marauders take a break before heading to Erie for back-to-back conference match-ups against nationally ranked opponents. Millersville takes on No. 11 Gannon on Friday, April 15 and No. 9 Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 16.
