Millersville, Pa. – Despite shortening the deficit to three goals mid-way through the second period, Millersville could not close the gap against Shippensburg and fell 15-9 in the final game of head coach Barb Waltman's 33-year career.
Waltman, the longest-tenured coach in Division II women's lacrosse and the all-time wins leader at Millersville, made her final appearance on the sidelines Thursday. One of her former players,
Mia Hall, was coaching on the other sideline.
The Marauders close out the season with a final record of 4-10 and 2-9 in the PSAC.
Just 10 minutes into action, six goals went on the board, four of which were in favor of the Raiders (8-8, 4-7 PSAC). Shippensburg held a 3-2 advantage at the 22:38 mark and went on a three-goal run to extend its lead.
The two clubs exchanged goals for the remainder of the period, and the Raiders took an 8-4 advantage into halftime.
The Marauders opened the second half with a goal when
Ashley Henderson connected with
Kelsey Schmoltze to bring MU within three. Shippensburg answered, though, with two goals of its own.
Over a five minute span the Marauders used a 3-1 series to again come within three.
Morgan Mangiaruga found an open
Brooke Fisher for the first goal, followed by unassisted tallies by
Mary Houtmann and Schmoltze.
The Raiders countered Millersville's run with a 4-1 stretch of their own to keep the Marauders out of contention.
Caitlin Shannon chipped in MU's final goal of the game at the 13:36 mark, and Shippensburg added three more scores.
Lindsey Kennedy scored four goals and handed out two assists for Shippensburg, and Katie Brewer, Karen Schnurr and Amanda Krok each scored three goals. Meghan Kearney registered 14 saves for the Raiders.
In the final game of her Marauder career, Schmoltze led the offense with three goals and an assist. Fisher added two goals and handed out an assist. Houtmann and
Becky Donkin each added a goal and Mangiaruga and
Ashley Henderson dished out one assist apiece.
Courtney Haggerty set aside eight shots in her final game between the pipes.
With 210 career victories, Waltman retires with more wins than any other coach in Division II history. She won two PSAC Championships with Millersville and her 1982 team, which was immortalized in the Millersville University Athletic Hall of Fame in October, won the AIAW Division III Championship.
