Millersville, Pa. – Although Millersville out-scored the Crimson Hawks 6-4 in the second period, its offensive efforts came too late as Indiana (Pa.) held onto to defeat the Marauders 11-10 in PSAC women's lacrosse action Saturday evening at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Millersville fell to an even 2-2 record and 0-2 in the PSAC.
IUP (3-1, 2-0 PSAC) shot .500 in the first half, netting seven goals on 14 shots taken. The club took an early 2-0 lead to start the contest, but quickly,
Brooke Fisher and
Kelsey Schmoltze connected to put the Marauders on the board.
Schmoltze scored again just two minutes later for Millersville's second goal off of an assist from
Ashley Henderson. Fisher then knotted the score at 3 on a free position shot. The Crimson Hawks closed out the half with a 4-1 scoring run and took a three-goal lead into the break.
The Marauders opened the second half with two-straight tallies in less than two minutes to cut their deficit to one.
Kathryn Kehring found an open Schmoltze for the first score followed by an unassisted goal by
Caitlin Shannon.
IUP jumped out to a 10-7 lead with 17:13 showing on the clock when Millersville countered with back-to-back goals in just 35 seconds. Fisher found the back of the net on a pass from Shannon, and Kehring cut the Hawks' lead to one with a free position goal.
IUP's final score came just under half way through the second period, but the Marauders were unable to catch up. Kehring netted her second free position goal for Millersville's 10th and final goal at 7:47. For the rest of the game, both teams went scoreless.
Millersville's
Courtney Haggerty set aside 10 shots between the pipes and picked up two ground balls. Crimson Hawk goalkeeper Kaitlin Sterling recorded seven saves on the day.
The Marauders continue their three-game home stretch when they host conference opponent Slippery Rock on Friday, March 25. Action is slated for 4 p.m.
