Marauders Drop First Conference Contest to Lock Haven

Lock HavenPa.After getting off to its best start in three years with back-to-back wins, the Millersville women's lacrosse team dropped its first conference contest of the season to nationally ranked Lock Haven 16-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Eagles, who are ranked No. 4 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Poll and No. 3 in the Synapse Sports Poll, remain undefeated on the year with a 3-0 mark and are now 1-0 in the PSAC.

Lock Haven notched the first goal just five minutes into action, but the Marauders (2-1, 0-1 PSAC) quickly countered when freshman Brooke Fisher found the back of the net on a free position shot.

The Lady Eagles rattled off 10 more goals to close out the first period and took an 11-1 lead into the break. Goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty got her work in throughout the first 30 minutes as she recorded 11 saves.

As a club, Millersville struggled to find offense, registering only three shots in the first half while Lock Haven took 25.

Just three minutes into the second period freshman Caitlin Shannon and senior Kelsey Schmoltze connected for MU's lone goal of the half. The tally marked Schmoltze's 10th goal in three games, just one short of last season's total. The Lady Eagles went on to score five more goals, four of which came off of free position shots.

Haggerty totaled 16 saves on the day in an impressive defensive effort. Lock Haven goalkeeper Heather Sacko set aside four shots.

Millersville returns home on Saturday, March 19 for its first conference match-up at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Action with Indiana (Pa.) is scheduled for 4 p.m.
