Schmoltze's Six Goals Helps Marauders to Fast Start

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. - Senior Kelsey Schmoltze's career-high six goals helped Millersville to a season-opening 15-9 victory over previously unbeaten Shepherd Friday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

For the second year in a row, the Marauders (1-0) opened the season with a victory over Shepherd. This year's Shepherd club, however, entered with a 4-0 record and had averaged more than 20 goals per game. Millersville limited Shepherd to just three second-half goals and pulled away by scoring four of the final five goals of the game.

Schmoltze's six tallies marked the most by a Marauder since Brittany Long's six against Shepherd in 2010. Schmoltze also added two assists. Her first helper came on the first goal of the game. Schmoltze hooked up with Ashley Henderson to give the Marauders' their first points just 1:02 into the season.

Shepherd's leading scorer Nicole Ruane evened the count just 25 seconds later, but the Marauders scored three unanswered to take a 4-1 lead. Schmoltze and Henderson accounted for Millersville's first five goals.

The Marauders led 10-4 before Shepherd scored two to close the first period. The Rams drew within 10-7 on Ruane's third goal of the game 1:11 into the second period. Schmoltze and Henderson sandwiched a Shepherd goal to keep the lead at four. Up 12-8, Millersville received some insurance from its freshmen.

Alex Lambert assisted Brooke Fisher with 15 minutes to go, and Lambert scored on an assist from Becky Donkin 4:35 later. That run put the Marauders up 14-8 and well out of the Ram's range.

Henderson finished with three goals and five draw controls. Freshman Kathryn Kehring scored two goals and added an assist. Courtney Haggerty stopped eight shots in goal.

Millersville looks for its first 2-0 start to the season since 2007 on Sunday when it travels to New York to take on Mercy College.
