Shirk's Four TD Passes and Defense's Four Picks Lift Marauders Past Lock Haven (Video)

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. - Senior Bill Shirk tossed four touchdown passes and the Millersville defense recorded four interceptions, sparking the Marauders to a 35-21 victory over Lock Haven Saturday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Shirk, who threw three touchdowns in week one, completed 20-of-30 passes for 232 yards on Saturday. Three of his TD strikes went to senior Jamal Smith, and the other went to junior defensive lineman Donald Vodopija, who slipped into the end zone for a two-yard catch--the first reception of his career.

Since tying a school record with four touchdown catches against Kutztown in 2009, Smith has totaled at least three touchdowns in two of the last four games. He finished Saturday's game with a team-high eight catches and 92 yards, giving him at least eight grabs and 90 yards in each of the first two games of 2010. Junior Matt Egenrieder caught five passes for 116 yards, giving him back-to-back 100 yard games.

Running back Mike Jones also posted his first career 100-yard game. He logged 100 yards on 16 carries, one of which went for 52 yards.

For the second game in a row, the offense produced explosive plays, but it was the Marauder defense that set the tone early. Millersville went three-and-out on its first series. Senior safety Matt Sutjak picked off Robert Meade on Lock Haven's first offensive play of the game, though, and sprinted 44 yards to the Lock Haven 4-yard line, setting up Shirk's first TD toss to Smith.

Lock Haven's Brett Sweeting returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Millersville 32, but again, Sutjak intercepted a Meade pass on the first play from scrimmage. Millersville took advantage of Sutjak's pick immediately. Mike Jones ripped off back-to-back six-yard runs and then bounced through traffic and raced 52 yards down the sideline to the Lock Haven 13. Four plays later, Shirk found Smith for the second time to give Millersville a 13-0 lead.

Lock Haven scored its first points on a 15-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Dunchak. Before the first half was complete, Fateen Brown scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard run that capped a six play, 69-yard drive with 3:32 left in the half, and Lock Haven's Jarryd Burkett hooked up with Jay Hartman from 14 yards out to close the first half with Millersville on top, 20-14.

Millersville boosted the lead back to two scores with Vodopija's TD grab and a Shirk-to-Smith two-point conversion with 3:35 left in the third. Lock Haven closed the gap back to seven on its first drive of the fourth quarter, but the Marauders came right back with Smith's third touchdown catch which put the finishing touches on a five-play, 72 yard drive that took just 2:09.

Millersville scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters, and it was the first time the Marauders produced a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in the same game since Nov. 1, 2008.

Lock Haven outgained the Marauders 357 to 352 but turned the ball over five times and racked up 107 yards on 13 penalties.

Pat Maloney led Millersville with 11 tackles including two for loss. Shane Gross also tallied two tackles for loss and finished with nine stops. Martique Vanderpool and Alfred Williams also intercepted passes for the Marauders.

It was the first two-interception game of Sutjak's career and his first interceptions since Sept. 5, 2009 at Slippery Rock. The last time Millersville totaled four picks in a game was against Cheyney on Oct. 27, 2007.

Millersville plays the third of its five-game home stand on Saturday Sept. 18 against Gannon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
