Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling program, under the direction of second-year head coach Todd Roberts, was recognized by the NCAA for their exceptional work in the classroom as part of the Academic Performance Program.
Millersville, which wrestles at the Division I level, was one of just 10 programs in the sport to earn a NCAA Public Recognition Award. The award is given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rate (APR).
High-performing teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The APR provides a real-time view of a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete during the school year. By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
Along with only 10 teams in wrestling, there were 841 programs in all NCAA sports across Division I that were recognized, including 349 men's teams. The teams publicly recognized this year for high achievement represent 13.4 percent of the 6,297 eligible Division I teams.
Nine other wrestling teams joined Millersville as award recipients: Bucknell, Columbia, Duke, Iowa State, Northwestern, U.S. Air Force Academy, Oklahoma, Penn and Virginia.
Millersville has had a wrestler named NWCA All-Academic in each of the last two years and a total of five national qualifiers in Roberts' two years.
