Box Score

Shippensburg, Pa. – Opening up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Easter Division play, the Millersville women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-5 decision to Shippensburg Wednesday afternoon. The Marauders fall to 1-2 (0-1 PSAC East) while the Red Raiders improve to 2-0 (1-0 PSAC East).

Shippensburg jumped out to an early 5-1 lead midway through the first period before Millersville countered. Brittney Long and Liz Weekley each notched a goal to bring the score to 5-3. The Red Raiders answered with its own two-goal run to extend the lead, but Long nabbed her second goal to send the clubs into halftime with a 7-4 score.

Senior Katie DiRico scored only 1:21 into the second period to bring the squad within another 2-goal margin, but the Marauders could not surpass the Red Raider defense. Shippensburg held Millersville to only six shots in the second half and a scoreless final 28 minutes of action. The Red Raiders continued on an unanswered five-goal run.

Shippensburg's Karen Schnurr led all scorers with four goals, and Katie Brewer and Liz DiNunno each added two. Red Raider goalkeeper collected 12 saves on the day.

Long led the Marauders with two goals and one assist, while Weekley, Kelsey Schmoltze, and DiRico chipped in one goal apiece. Long and Weekley each picked up four groundballs, and goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty set aside 18 shots.

The match-up with Shippensburg was the first of a two-game PSAC-wide “Lax 4 Life” fundraiser, an effort to raise money for adolescent suicide prevention. Proceeds raised will go toward the Allyson Fund, started three years ago after former West Chester goalkeeper Mary Beth Green's younger sister Allyson committed suicide.
