Millersville and F&M Clash in Battle for the Rupp Cup (Video)

Millersville, Pa. -
The annual dual between the Millersville and Franklin & Marshall wrestling programs is always for bragging rights, but with the recent passing of former coach Dr. Theodore Rupp, Friday's Battle for the Rupp Cup has taken on even more significance.

The winner of the dual receives the Rupp Cup, named after the late Ted Rupp, who graduated from Franklin & Marshall in 1935, started the wrestling program and taught at Millersville, and at one point coached both teams. Fewer than five miles separate the two schools, but rarely do they compete head-to-head in any sport other than wrestling. The impact that Rupp had on both programs is likely one of the key reasons the rivalry exists to this day.

The series began in 1994 with an F&M victory, but Millersville has won 15 of the 18 all-time meetings including the last six. Last year, the Marauders needed a pin from Ray Bennett at 197 to clinch a 23-18 win.

Both programs have limped through 2010, and capturing the Rupp Cup on Friday would certainly provide a bright moment to the winner. Millersville, plagued by injuries, has been forced to forfeit as many as three weight classes in a dual. The Marauders enter Friday without wrestlers at 133 and 141 pounds and without their projected preseason starters at 125, 184 and 197.

The injury bug has been the biggest factor in the Marauders' 3-13-1 dual mark. Millersville has dropped seven-straight duals. Franklin & Marshall is without a victory in its 11 duals this year.

Two Marauders, though, are turning in outstanding seasons. Senior Jarrett Hosetter (157) is 20-5 and needs just three more wins to join the Millersville elite with 100 career wins. Redshirt sophomore Shane Smith is tied with Hostetter for the team lead in victories, and 12 of his 20 victories have come by fall.

Smith will tangle with sophomore Matt Fullowan in the headlining match Friday. Fullowan is one of only two Diplomats with a winning record. His 14-5 record includes five major decisions and two tech falls.

Friday's duals at F&M begins at 7:30 p.m. Live, pay-per-view action can be seen by clicking here.
