2010 Baseball Quick Facts
Millersville, Pa. - No Millersville baseball coach has won more games in his first two seasons than Jon Shehan. The 2008 PSAC East Coach of the Year has led the team 48 wins, a PSAC Eastern Division title and its first winning season in eight years. Shehan and his 2010 team, however, have their sites set higher.
As practice opened Wednesday on the turf of Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, Shehan was coaching his most veteran and talented group of his short tenure at Millersville. The team boasts 16 returning letterwinners, five position starters and six starting pitchers that logged at least five starts.
Among the position players returning is All-PSAC East and All-Atlantic Region pick Derek Kline, who was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in June but returned for his redshirt junior senior. Kline not only led the Marauders in five offensive categories, but he also developed into a pro prospect on the mound despite having never pitched before. Shehan expects him to continue to develop and refine his skills in 2010.
Ryan McCormick was an All-PSAC East Second Team selection at second base but plans to move to shortstop for the 2010 season. He was a breakout player in 2009, hitting .331 from the leadoff spot. He carried his success into the summer and was named All-River Valley League.
With the expected return of center fielder Corey Phelan, the Marauders should have one of the top defensive outfields in the PSAC. Phelan was an Atlantic Region Gold Glove recipient before suffering a knee injury that kept him out of the 2009 season. In 2008 he hit .333 with five homers and 15 steals. Flanking Phelan is expected to be sophomores Adam Boyd and Chris Edgar. Both are coming off stellar freshmen campaigns.
Behind the plate, the Marauders return starter Miles Gallagher, an All-PSAC East Second Team pick last year who led the team in home runs and tied for the team lead in steals.
Kline wasn't the only pitcher to emerge as a front-line starter in 2009. Senior Forrest Mengle lowered his ERA by two points and led the team in wins with a 6-3 mark. Sophomores Jason Long and Kyle Belanchik were regular starters in PSAC East games a year ago as well.
