Millersville, Pa. - A banged-up Millersville women's lacrosse team closed its 2009 season Wednesday afternoon with a 9-4 loss to visiting Shippensburg.
The Marauders (6-10, 2-7 PSAC East), who had been playing with a short bench of much of the season because of injuries, received another blow during a late comeback attempt. With seven minutes left and trailing by five, leading scorer
Liz Weekley left the game with an injury and did not return.
Without its top offensive weapon, the Marauders could not muster a final comeback despite several late opportunities.
Shippensburg (9-8, 5-5 PSAC East) scored the first three goals of the game, and it took Millersville until the 11-minute mark to score its first goal.
Katie DiRico scored unassisted to make it a 3-1 game.
Shippensburg, however, scored the next three goals, including two from Beth Long to extend the advantage.
With just 10 seconds left in the period, Weekley scored her 44th goal of the season, cutting Ship's lead to 6-2 at the break.
Shippensburg wasted no time putting distance between itself and the Marauders in the second half, scoring twice in the first three minutes. Millersville's
Mary Houtmann and
Kelly Kemper followed with scores to make it an 8-4 game, but the Marauders could not get any closer.
Shippensburg held a 30-15 edge in shots.
