Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team led by two with three minutes to go, but visiting East Stroudsburg put together a furious rally, scoring three goals in the final 2:32 to snatch a PSAC East win away from the Marauders, 16-15.
Neither team led by more than three goals at any point during the game and Millersville (1-2, 0-2 PSAC East), which trailed 6-3 early in the first half, had stormed to a 13-10 lead on a
Liz Weekley goal with 13:29 left in the game. East Stroudsburg (3-3, 2-0 PSAC East) scored two answered goals in just over one minute to cut the Marauder lead to 13-12.
The two clubs traded goals, and Kelly Kemper's third goal of the game with 3:14 on the clock put Millersville up 15-13. ESU, though, got a free position goal from Morgan Knowles 42 seconds after Kemper's strike. 39 seconds later, Maure Perrymond knotted the game at 15.
East Stroudsburg won the following draw control and Michelle Mangiaruga, who scored a team-high four goals in the game, raced downfield and found the back of the net with just 34 seconds left on the clock.
Millersville's
Katrina Segar picked up a ground ball on a turnover with 13 seconds to go, giving Millersville one last ditch effort. Segar found Weekley, and after a pair of fouls, Weekley had a shot attempt from just outside eight meters with one second left. The shot, however, was wide.
East Stroudsburg out-shot the Marauders 32-29 and took 18 draw controls--12 in the second half--to Millersville's 15.
Millersville received three goals from
Mary Houtmann,
Kelly Kemper, Brittany Long and
Katie DiRico. Kemper also added two assists and four draw controls. Weekley totaled two goals, one assist, six ground balls and two drawn controls.
Millersville hits the road for the first time on Monday, March 23 to take on Kutztown. Game time for the PSAC East match-up is 4 p.m.
