
Millersville Wrestling Opens Season with Solid Showing at ESU Open

East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling squad opened its 2008-09 season Saturday at the ESU Open and were led by Shane Smith, Sean Reed, #J.J. Lester and Jarrett Hostetter#, all of who placed in a packed field.
Millersville increased its total of placewinners from one to four this season. Raymond Bennett was the lone Marauder to place in 2007, finishing in third.
Hostetter, the team's lone returning national qualifer, wrestled unattached at 157 pounds but notched a 10-3 victory in his first bout and then a 13-3 major decision over Zach Marlatt of Delaware Valley before falling to 3-2 to eventual runner-up, Mike Kessler of Rider.
Hostetter bounced back in the consolation bracket, defeating Kutztown's Chris Chambers 12-4. He then rolled to his third major decision of the afternoon, defeating Gabe Burak of Penn, 11-2.
Smith, wrestling at 174 pounds, was equally impressive. He recorded three falls on his way to a fifth-place finish. He pinned Lehigh's David Chirichello in 1:52 before dropping a decision to eventual champion Mike Letts from Maryland. Smith responded by pinning Ryan Dorman in 1:42 and then scored another pinfall over Kyle Skinner of Delaware State in 4:18.
After dropping a 7-4 decision to third-place finish Rob Morrison, Smith registered an 11-6 win in the fifth-place match.
Millersville newcomer Sean Reed took sixth at 133 pounds. He edged Mike Morales 11-10 in his first match. After dropping into the consolation bracket, Reed scored a fall in just 26 seconds and then won 4-2 over Matthew Swallow of East Stroudsburg. Reed fell to third-place finisher Tommy Lorenzo of Rider and in the fifth-place bout, he was pinned by Penn's Marty Borowsky.
At 149, Lester battled through the consolation bracket to reach the seventh-place match. Lester fell in his opening match but won four-straight decisions including a 3-1 sudden victory win over Charles Favia. In the seventh-place match, though, both Lester and Hofstra's Tyler Banks did not compete, resulting in a no contest.
Also in action for the Marauders was Joshua Evans, who won a pair of decisions at 165. Red-shirt freshman Jason Foor picked up two wins at 184 pounds as well. 197-pounder Raymond Bennett also won two matches including a sudden victory pin at 7:23 against Tyler Smith of Rider, who ended up finishing in fifth place.
John Andel, wrestling at 125 pounds, notched two decisions, scoring a 12-4 major decision over David Luthy of East Stroudsburg and a 4-1 decision over teammate Rob Sylvester.
Millersville squares off against Wagner and Delaware State on Wednesday, Nov. 19 in the season's first dual meet. The matches will be in held in Pucillo Gymnasium and will begin at 4 p.m.
